Last Card, and why it isn't called UNO
Everybody asked for UNO. Here's the card game we built instead, and the three decisions behind it.
After poker, the game people asked for most was UNO. I understand why. Everyone knows it, kids and grandparents can play together, and it's loud in the best way.
So we built it. It just isn't called UNO, because UNO belongs to Mattel. It's called Last Card, after the moment you're down to one and everyone at the table knows it.
The rules you already know
Match the colour or the number. Skip, reverse, draw two. Wild cards let you pick the colour, and the nasty wild makes the next person draw four. If you can't go, you draw one card, and if it fits you can play it straight away. First to empty their hand wins.
If you've played UNO or Crazy Eights, you need about ten seconds to learn it.
Our own cards
I didn't want something that looks like a copy with the logo filed off. Our cards are flat colour in the four colours of the site, with one big mark in the middle and the value in two corners. Wilds are split into all four colours.
Your hand is yours
This one took the most care. Your cards are only ever sent to your browser. Everyone else gets a number, how many cards you hold, and never which ones. There's nothing to peek at, even if you know how to open the network tab.
When someone gets down to one card, a small red "Last card!" appears next to their name for the whole table. You don't have to shout it.
It plays two to six, bots fill the empty seats, and you can try a hand at letshang.io/demo.
Try it with your people
Set a table, send one link. It only happens if enough of them can make it.
