Hiking

How to organise a hike with friends

A hike takes a whole morning, which is why people hesitate before saying yes. Give them the two facts they need, where you meet and when you are back, and the hesitation goes away.

Say when you are back, not only when you start

"Sunday, 8 in the morning" sounds like the whole day is gone. "Sunday 8 to 1, coffee at the top" sounds like a morning. The second one fills up, the first one does not.

Three is enough, eight is plenty

Three people make a hike worth the early start. Above eight the group stretches out on the trail and splits into two anyway. Set the minimum at three, so the plan survives when two people drop out.

Put the meeting point on the map

The trailhead is the part people get wrong. Pick the exact spot, so everyone gets the address, directions that open in their maps app, and a reminder an hour before. The chat is where you sort out who drives.

Parking is the second thing people get wrong. If the car park fills early, say so in the invitation and ask who has space in their car, rather than finding out at eight in the morning that four cars went to three different places.

Say what the walk asks of people

Distance, climb and how long you will be out. Those three numbers decide who says yes, and guessing them wrong is how you end up with one person in trainers on a ridge.

Add the weather rule while you are at it: if it rains, you walk anyway, or if it rains, it moves to next week. Deciding it now saves a long thread on the morning itself.

4 ideas, and what each one needs

Tap one and the form opens with the activity and the number of people already in it. Share the link, and it's on once your people are in.

Sunday morning hike

Needs 3 people

Early start, coffee at the top, home by lunch. The plan that makes the rest of the day feel long.

An easy walk for a mixed group

Needs 4 people

Say the distance and the climb in the invitation. People who are not sure will come if they know what they are saying yes to.

A sunrise walk

Needs 3 people

Hard to do alone, easy in a group. Three is the number that gets everyone out of bed.

A monthly hike that repeats

Needs 4 people

One setup, then the next one opens by itself and whoever can make it comes.

How it works here

Nobody has to be the first to say yes.

  1. 1.Pick the idea and say how many people it needs.
  2. 2.Send one link to your people. They tap "Count me in".
  3. 3.It's on once enough of them are in. Everyone gets the invite, the place and a reminder.

If too few people join, it quietly does not happen. Nobody shows up alone, and nobody has to cancel anything.

Three to eight. Below three it is easy to cancel, above eight the group splits and the pace becomes an argument.

How do you share the meeting point?

Pick the place on the map when you create the hangout. Everyone going gets the address, a directions link and a reminder an hour before.

Pick one and send the link.

Free, nothing to install, and it's on once your people are in.
