Start with a game everyone already knows
The fastest way to lose the first half hour is a game that needs to be explained. Open with something everyone knows, then bring out the long one once people are warm.
Four is the magic number
Four players make almost every game work, and four is a number you can actually get. Set the minimum at four and the maximum at six or eight, so the table stays one table.
